Description:
One of the most enduring images of Connemara are the gnarled and windswept trees that can be found all over the landscape. This image shows such a tree and gives a small hint as to the direction of the prevailing wind!
On ridges such as the one this tree clings to, there is almost constant wind. From the moment the sapling first peeps above the ground it fights the wind to become established, and grows almost parallel to the ground.
This image was made with a long telephoto lens (400mm), and it was quite a challenge to keep the wind from shaking the camera and blurring the image. I succeeded, but when seen in a large print it becomes clear that it was much more windy on the ridge than where I was. The trunk of the tree is in sharp focus, but the tips of the brances are blurred because they were fluttering in the breeze!
