Description:
This is an image from my first flight over the Eyjafjallajökull summit crater. The eruption was a little less energetic than it had been in days past, and there was lots of smoke and steam, but on this last pass we were rewarded with some clear lava explosions.
One thing that the photographs can't capture is the incredible shockwaves that are visible through the smoke. You can see the expanding wave with each detonation.
