Description:
This is my favourite image from my trip to France in May, 2010.
The Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon, or the Grand Canyon du Verdon) is a massively impressive system of gorges formed by the Verdon river. Seen here from the southern rim you can see the river winding its way through the 700 foot deep canyon towards the Lac du Ste Croix.
This was a very difficult photograph to take due to the huge contrast between the bright setting sun and the canyon, which is totally in shadow. As such, this is a merge of three exposures at different brightnesses.
