Description:
This image was taken on a particularly fine Summer's evening. I thought it would be a worthwhile sunset, so down to Dun Laoghaire I went.
Of the two piers that make up Dun Laoghaire harbour, the East is the most heavily used by walkers. It's nicely paved, is easier to get to and has buskers and ice-cream vendors in abundance during the Summer months. The West Pier has a grittier feel, and is certainly my favourite of the two. It also sports an uninterrupted view of the sweep of Dublin Bay from Blackrock to Howth Head.
This view is the part of that vista that falls roughly between Merrion and Ringsend. The cranes you see on the left of the image, right in front of the setting sun are involved in the construction of apartments near St. Vincent's Hospital in Merrion. The twin chimney stacks belong to the ESB power station at Poolbeg - also known as the Pigeon House.
The name 'Pigeon House' doesn't refer to a place where racing pigeons used to be housed as my father once told me. It comes instead from a storehouse built on the site around 1717, during the construction of the South Bull Wall. The owner's name was John Pidgeon.
