Description:
When the glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age, they deposited large boulders in their wake. Called "erratics" by geologists because they are found far from their original locations, they have become known colloquialy as "giants' footballs".
The erratics to be found in the Burren suit this title admirably, as they stand out distinctly from the flat limestone countryside. In this image, we see one such "football" resting by the Galway Bay coastline. The Twelve Bens (or Twelve Pins) can be seen dimly in the distance.
