— Jennifer Cobble, USA

My ultimate goal is for you to have a great time, get some fantastic photographs and go home having learned how to make better images for yourself.

Skill Levels

These classes will cater to all skill levels. From someone who is just getting started with a new camera to the advanced amateur, everyone is welcome.

Testimonial:

"Just a short message to say how much I enjoyed the 2 day workshop this week. Your practical ideas were most beneficial and the field work proved to be invaluable. This, backed up with the studio exercises I believe will help me greatly to improve my camera skills."

— Ivan O'Riordan, Limerick

What You Will Learn

I teach everything from basic camera controls to composition and lighting through to advanced photoshop techniques.

A typical day will begin with an early rise to catch the morning light, followed by a session in the studio, during which we'll eat lunch. In the evening, we head out again for the sunset. After that, it's back to the B&B for some much-deserved sleep.

A synopsis of the subjects on offer during the course:

In the Field:

  • How to make a good exposure
  • Understanding aperture and depth of field
  • Shooting technique and how to eliminate camera shake and vibration
  • Photographing panoramas with a view to digital stitching
  • How to use filters (polarizing and neutral density)
  • The basics of good composition, and when to break the rules
  • How to use a view camera to give you front-to-back focus and/or alter perspective
  • How to use RAW mode to maximise your image's potential
  • Exposing to the right to capture maximum detail

In the Studio:

  • Optimising your image in Photoshop and Lightroom:
    • Curves
    • Local contrast enhancement
    • Contrast masking
    • Using a pen and tablet to ease your workflow
    • Eliminating colour fringing and halos
  • Understanding colour spaces
  • The importance of profiles, and how to create them
  • Understanding RAW capture and how to convert your images.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation is not included, but if it is required I can book it for you in a comfortable bed & breakfast near the studio. I recommend that you stay the night before we begin, and the night of the first day. We finish in the afternoon of the second day, so you would be home that evening.

Minutes from Gougane Barra, and in the heart of the Gaelteacht, it is ideally suited to act as a base for photography. Some of the most spectacular coastline in Ireland is just an hour's drive away and the mountains of the Beara and Iveragh peninsulas likewise.

Two breakfasts are included in the price of the workshop.

"Really enjoyed the workshop, learned a lot. Impressed with your cooking and enjoyed your company."
