Photographing the Edge of the Arctic: Northeast Greenland This September

There are places where the photography comes easily, almost instinctively — where scale, light, and subject align so naturally that dramatic images present themselves without effort. Northeast Greenland is very much one of those places. Vast icebergs, immense fjords, fractured coastlines, and Arctic light in constant flux make the sense of spectacle immediate and undeniable.

But while it’s easy to respond to the drama here, the most rewarding photographs tend to come from looking a little deeper.

This September, I’ll be returning to Greenland as an instructor on a small-group expedition led by Daníel Bergmann, a close friend and long-time collaborator in Arctic environments. Travelling by ship through one of the most remote regions on Earth, we’ll be moving continuously through a landscape that never stops changing.

Beyond the Obvious

In a place like Northeast Greenland, the challenge isn’t finding something to photograph — it’s resisting the temptation to photograph everything. When the scale is overwhelming, images can easily rely on spectacle alone, repeating the same visual ideas with different foregrounds.

The deeper reward comes from learning how to respond with intent while constantly on the move: recognising relationships between ice, water, land, and light; isolating moments of order within chaos; and making decisions quickly without becoming careless. These quieter choices often lead to images with far greater staying power than the most obvious wide-angle drama.

This kind of photography isn’t slower — it’s more deliberate.

My Role on the Expedition

Daníel, Peter and Morten in 2022

This will be my first photography workshop since 2022, and it’s one I’ve chosen very carefully. My role is to help participants navigate the balance between responding to the extraordinary and refining what they see in the moment.

That support happens throughout the journey through:

  • One-to-one guidance in the field

  • Conversations around composition, structure, and visual economy

  • Evening image reviews and informal discussion

  • Helping you understand why certain images hold together, rather than simply reacting to scale

When everything is impressive, restraint becomes a creative tool.

Working With Daníel Bergmann

Daníel at the Bear Islands in 2022

Daníel’s experience in Arctic regions and his measured, thoughtful approach to guiding make him an ideal partner for this expedition. Having worked together before, I value how closely our approaches align: practical, grounded, and focused on helping photographers engage fully with what’s in front of them rather than chasing preconceived ideas.

The expedition itself sets the pace; our role is to help you make the most of it photographically.

A Rare Opportunity

Northeast Greenland remains one of the least accessible regions on the planet, and one that is changing rapidly. To photograph it at all is a privilege; to do so thoughtfully and with time, guidance, and context is increasingly rare. For many, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in a landscape that is both monumental and vanishing.

If this resonates, full details of the expedition — including itinerary, logistics, and availability — are available on Daníel’s website:
