Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands sit in the North Atlantic like a cluster of green blades rising from grey water. Eighteen islands, connected by tunnels, ferries and sheer stubbornness. I first travelled there from Cork expecting dramatic scenery, and what I found was something more than that. A place where the weather shifts every twenty minutes, where cloud pours over cliff edges like slow water, and where tiny grass-roofed villages cling to hillsides as if they've simply grown there.

Drangarnir sea stack in flat calm is one thing. Drangarnir with storm waves detonating against its base is quite another! The light in the Faroes rarely sits still, and that restlessness is what makes the place so rewarding to photograph.

Múlafossur waterfall, the vertical walls of Tindhólmur, the old turf-roofed church at Saksun. These are landscapes that demand patience and waterproofs in equal measure.
