Letters from the Landscape

Five walruses packed together on a gravel beach in Svalbard, their tusks catching the flat Arctic light. Behind them, blue-white icebergs rise sharply from the water, dwarfing the animals completely. The overcast sky gives the whole scene an even, diffused quality where the pale blue in that ice becomes almost the only colour in the frame.

Getting close to walruses means moving slowly and staying low, which on a Svalbard gravel beach in July is a cold, damp business. The smell hits you well before the composition comes together. They grunt and grumble constantly, shoving each other for space, and the nearest animal was perhaps fifteen metres away. At that distance you can see the individual whiskers on their faces, the deep folds in their skin. I spent a long time on my stomach waiting for one of them to lift its head at the right moment!

This was the composition I wanted. The animals grounded in the foreground, those icebergs stacked behind them, everything held in that cold grey Arctic light.

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
