The photograph
Glacier Pano, Isbukta

Letters from the Landscape

Isbukta sits on Spitsbergen's western coast, a bay dominated by this tidewater glacier pushing its way down to the sea. I made this panoramic from a position looking directly across the glacier face, where the ice cliff drops vertically into the frozen fjord below. The scale is difficult to convey. Those dark rocky outcrops on the flanking mountainsides give some sense of it, but even they feel diminished against the mass of ice and snow.

The light was flat for most of our time here, heavy cloud sitting low over everything. Then a break opened up right in the centre of the frame, diffused and pale, pushing through the overcast just enough to separate the glacier from the sky. I had the tripod set for the panoramic already and made several passes. This was the one that worked.

The mountains on either side frame the glacier like walls of a corridor, all snow-covered slopes and exposed rock. It's a remarkably quiet, powerful place.

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
