I made this from a fixed-wing airplane, which changes everything. No hovering, no circling back. I had one direction I could point the camera without catching a wing or strut in the frame, and I had to fire the moment the lighthouse rotated into view. That was it.
I'd gone up to catch a big sea detonating against the rock. The forecast looked promising. It didn't quite deliver. But what I got instead was something better in its own way. The swell had just hit and was pulling back, and you can see the water ebbing off in every direction, revealing so much of Fastnet Rock that is normally underwater. The dark mass of it. The actual shape and scale.
From sea level, you see a lighthouse on a lump of rock. From up here, in the trough between waves, the rock dominates. The lighthouse is over fifty metres tall and it looks almost secondary. That's what I love about this photograph. Ireland's Teardrop, the last point of land emigrants saw as they sailed west, guiding ships since 1904. But from this angle, what strikes me is the sheer physical presence of the rock itself, battered and massive, with the Atlantic pulling away before the next wave arrives.
I still haven't got the massive wave I originally went up for. But I'm patient enough to keep trying!
Read the story behind these photographs, from six or seven nights out on the Fastnet Rock.
