The Black Valley, Co. Kerry

Letters from the Landscape

Molly's Cottage sits at the end of the Black Valley, right on the Kerry Way. The roof is slowly losing its slates and the whole place is gradually being reclaimed by nature. It's one of my favourite locations in Kerry, and I keep coming back to it.

It was a windy day with the light rapidly changing, cloud shadows moving across the landscape. I waited for the right moment and caught this break throwing selective light across the middle ground, picking out the cottage, the road, the dry stone walls. Everything else stayed muted.

The Black Valley was the last place in Ireland to receive electricity, which didn't arrive until 1976. The narrow road draws you in past old field boundaries, grass growing up the middle of it, and the scattered trees around the ruin give it scale. Then the mountain just rises straight up behind.

Every print is signed. Unframed and framed prints are signed and titled by hand on the white border beneath the photograph.

  • Archival

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.

Which finish should I choose?
  • Unframed Museum-quality Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper. Choose your own frame.
  • Framed Black wood frame, glazed with acrylic so it travels safely, with a mount on Exhibition and Feature sizes. Ready to hang.
  • Canvas Gallery-wrapped canvas.
  • Floating Panel Mounted on a 3 mm aluminium composite panel, made in-house. Frameless, no glass, ready to hang. Best for modern interiors and maximum impact.
Can I see it on my wall first?

Yes, free. Send me a photograph of your wall. I'll send it back with the print hanging on it, at its true size and in the correct perspective. Start my free preview

★★★★★An image that invites you to walk on down the lane to explore.
Finding Peter Cox’s photography gallery was an unexpected experience while on a recent cruise. His gallery was welcoming and the images were beautiful captures of nature’s glory. I fell in love with The Black Valley, Co. Kerry, on first sight. I am so delighted with the purchase experience. Peter was willing to hold shipping until I returned from my cruise. The print arrived in excellent condition but with no excess of packaging. Unwrapping it was a joy and it brought back memories of visiting his gallery. The print is mounted on my family room wall where I can see it every day for long periods of time. In my mind I have walked down the road in front of the little cottage and wondered just who might have lived there, what their life was like and how long has it been since it was occupied? It’s not a passive image, but rather one that invites you in to explore, wander and wonder. I absolutely love everything about it and am so glad I wandered into his gallery on my one day in Kinsale.
