The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

Svalbard in summer, and this young Arctic fox is mid-moult. The winter white is giving way to patches of grey and brown, that scruffy transitional coat they carry through the brighter months. It's lying low on a ridge of tundra moss, watching me with full attention but no real alarm. Curious more than cautious.

The directional light picks out every detail in the fur while the rocky background falls into deep shadow, which isolates the fox beautifully against the hillside. Those eyes are extraordinary. Direct, steady, completely unbothered. The tundra vegetation is sparse but vivid green at this time of year, a brief window before everything turns again!

I love how the low angle and shallow ridge give the composition a sense of the fox's world rather than ours. A quiet, watchful moment on a Svalbard hillside.
