Letters from the Landscape
That warm orange glow bled across the water while the sky above stayed dark and brooding. The basalt in the foreground was wet from the incoming tide, picking up both temperatures at once. Cool greys on top, warmth underneath. Bengore Head sat out on the horizon with that distinctive flat profile, catching the last of it.
I had the tripod low among the rocks. The sea was rolling in with enough energy to give the foreground real movement, that turbulent wash dragging across dark stone. A few birds perched on a rock in the middle distance, completely unbothered.
It lasted maybe five minutes. Then the gap closed and the whole coast went grey again. What I love about this photograph is the restraint of it. The sun barely made it through, just enough to leave its mark. The geology up here is so dark and angular that when warm light does arrive, it has this extraordinary surface to work against. I'm glad I waited for it!

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
