Letters from the Landscape
I made this after sunset, looking west towards the headland and the Stags sea stacks beyond. The light had shifted from warm to cool, and the whole scene was settling into deep, layered blues. Sky, water, the distant silhouette. Everything was variations on the same colour, but each surface held it differently. The ocean had this wonderful quality where the swells still carried shape and direction, but the slightly longer exposure softened them just enough to quiet the scene down. That middle ground between frozen motion and complete blur is where I find the most interesting photographs.
Out on the horizon, the Stags are just visible. Jagged rock pillars rising from the Atlantic, reduced at this distance to small dark shapes. Somehow that makes them more dramatic. You know the violence of the water around their base, but here they're just part of that long, low line.
North Mayo doesn't get the attention it deserves from photographers. The coastline is stripped back to its essentials. Rock, water, sky, bog. That evening I had the whole place to myself, which at somewhere this remote feels about right!

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
