Letters from the Landscape

I made this from the Bull Rock, about ten kilometres off the tip of the Beara Peninsula. I'd spent a couple of nights out there, camped on this massive rock with a tunnel running clean through it, an abandoned lighthouse on top, and one of Ireland's largest gannet colonies for company. The noise and the smell are extraordinary.

For much of the trip I found myself looking back towards the mainland rather than out to sea. This particular afternoon, heavy dark cloud had been stacking up behind Dursey Island all day. There was a quality to the light that made everything feel weighted and charged. The kind of atmosphere where you know something is coming but it hasn't arrived yet.

From out there you can see the Cow and Calf rocks sitting between you and Dursey, and there's a beautiful symmetry to the way they anchor the lower half of the frame while the sky does all the work above. A single gannet flew through the scene just as I released the shutter. Perfect timing. In a large print, you can actually make out the broken lighthouse on the Calf rock, which adds another layer to it.

Dursey itself is reached only by cable car. From the Bull, it looks like the edge of the known world. And yet it was the closest thing to civilisation I had!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
