Letters from the Landscape

Fifteen minutes from home. I must have driven past Carrigaphooca hundreds of times over the years, always telling myself I'd stop. You know how it is with places on your own doorstep. They're permanently available, so you never quite get around to it.

This particular winter's morning, the low sun caught the east-facing wall of the tower and I had that familiar argument with myself. Stop now or it'll be another ten years. So I pulled the car in. The frost was heavy on the ground, that crisp white coating you only get on still, clear mornings. The light was raking across the stonework from the south-east, picking out every joint and fracture in what remains of the battlements. A 15th century tower house on the banks of the Sullane River, its name translates as The Castle of the Fairy Rock. Ghost hunters visit it regularly. Whatever spirits were present that morning, they were in generous form and let me have the light.

What I really enjoy about this image is the wooden post-and-rail fence curving through the midground like the bow of a ship. I didn't plan it. Just set up the tripod and realised it was there, pulling the eye straight up toward the tower. A good reminder that the photographs closest to home are often the ones you have to force yourself to make!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
