Letters from the Landscape

Lot's Wife has stood on this headland above Baltimore harbour since 1849. A whitewashed bullet-shaped beacon topped with a spherical finial, built to guide boats safely through the approaches below. It's a remarkable structure, and from this angle you get the full sweep of coastline behind it, right out to the Barrack Point lighthouse with its red housing on the far headland.

I was up here well before dawn, waiting for that deep blue pre-dawn light to settle across the cliffs and the inlet. Barely a breath of wind. The water had gone completely still, almost milky in the extended exposure, and the whole harbour felt like it was holding its breath. Have you ever been to Baltimore at that hour? The place is absurdly peaceful.

The beacon sits perfectly against all of it. Rocky shoreline, distant headlands, flat calm water. I could have stayed for hours, but the light was already starting to shift!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
