The road to Dunlough Bay gets worse the further you go. Narrower, rougher, until you're fairly sure you've made a mistake. You haven't. It just ends, and you walk down to an old landing where concrete steps meet dark slate and the Atlantic stretches out flat and grey.
I made this photograph late in the evening with the light almost gone and the water dead calm. That stillness you get when the wind drops completely. The long exposure took care of whatever small movement remained, and the old slipway became the anchor of the whole composition, drawing the eye out past layered rock shelves toward the cliffs and sea stacks along the coast. It's a remarkably dramatic stretch of shoreline, all the more so for how few people ever see it.
Not long after I took this, the bay made the national news. Drug smugglers miscalculated badly bringing a shipment ashore, their boat was swamped, and bags of cocaine washed up along the coast for days. Gave me pause, I'll admit. I spend a lot of time alone at isolated landings in the middle of the night, and the thought of standing on those steps at 3am while a drug deal goes sideways is not exactly comforting. I still go out to these places after dark. I just keep my wits about me a little more than I used to!
