Letters from the Landscape

Twelve miles off the coast, on a rock that barely breaks the surface. That's where this sits. And from this distance, the Fastnet looks remarkably small. A white finger on a dark smudge, surrounded by nothing but Atlantic.

Most of my photographs of the lighthouse have it filling the frame, all Cornish granite detail and waves crashing around the base. But this particular evening I wanted something different. The sea had settled into long, gentle swells, which almost never happens out there. The light was doing that thing it sometimes does in late summer, where the clouds pick up soft pinks and warm peach tones well before actual sunset. I knew immediately this was the image to make.

The quiet subtlety is the whole point. That tiny structure marks the southwestern corner of Ireland. The last thing emigrants saw leaving for America, which is where "Teardrop of Ireland" comes from. The evening light catches the white of the tower just enough to hold your eye against all that ocean and sky. No crashing waves, no stormy skies. Just calm water, fading light, and a remarkable piece of human determination sitting out there on its own. I find that more moving than any amount of drama!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
