The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

I was supposed to be filming. Promotional footage for the Atlantic Light Kickstarter, working through a shot list, focused on video. Then I looked down and the water stopped me.

Inchydoney is minutes from Clonakilty. Families, surfers, dog walkers. A proper working beach. But from a few hundred feet up, it becomes something else entirely. The deep green of the Atlantic giving way to white surf, then that thin film of water sliding back across the sand as each wave retreated. Each band of colour distinct, like they'd been laid down deliberately. That turquoise-green where the shallows meet the foam is a colour that only shows itself under overcast skies. Bright sunshine turns everything reflective and you lose it completely.

Up in the top right of the frame, a dog walker crosses the sand. I didn't plan for them to be there, but they're what makes the image work. Without those two small figures, you'd have no way to register the sheer breadth of the strand. They keep it honest. Not an abstract composition, but a real place on an ordinary afternoon in Cork.

I paused the video work and took the still. Sometimes the best photographs arrive while you're busy doing something else!

Every print

  • Made to order

Every print is made to order: printed, checked, signed, and packaged for you individually.

Every print is signed. Unframed and framed prints are signed and titled by hand on the white border beneath the photograph.

  • Archival

Prints are well-packaged, tracked and insured. If one arrives damaged, I'll replace it at no cost.

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.

Which finish should I choose?
  • Unframed Museum-quality Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper. Choose your own frame.
  • Framed Black wood frame, glazed with acrylic so it travels safely, with a mount on Exhibition and Feature sizes. Ready to hang.
  • Canvas Gallery-wrapped canvas.
  • Floating Panel Mounted on a 3 mm aluminium composite panel, made in-house. Frameless, no glass, ready to hang. Best for modern interiors and maximum impact.
Can I see it on my wall first?
