Gap of Dunloe, Co. Kerry

November in the Gap of Dunloe. No coaches, no jaunting cars, no one. Just an empty road and a lake so still it was hard to tell where the water ended and the sky began.

I have two versions of this photograph. A panoramic, and this full-frame composition. I prefer this one. There's a rock in the bottom left that anchors everything, gives your eye somewhere to start before it travels across the water and up into the valley. When you get a mirror like this, the foreground does double duty. The sky is already up there doing its thing. Let the water carry it.

The sun was well behind the MacGillycuddy's Reeks by the time I made this. That post-sunset window where the colour actually intensifies rather than fades. The clouds had broken just enough to let pink light flood in across the tops, and the lake held every bit of it. The reflection was almost sharper than the sky itself, the way it can be when the surface is absolutely calm and the tones deepen slightly in the water.

The Gap is a glacial pass between the Reeks and Purple Mountain, and on a quiet November evening it feels properly old. The valley funnels everything inward. Sound, light, your attention. I stood there for twenty minutes after making this frame, not photographing, just watching the colour shift through its last stages. The kind of evening that rewards you for showing up in the off-season, when nobody else is around and the landscape gives you something it keeps hidden the rest of the year!
