The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

Gallarus Oratory has stood on the Dingle Peninsula for somewhere between 800 and 1,300 years, depending on who you ask. Nobody knows for certain. What is certain is that the dry-stone corbelled roof still keeps out the rain, which for a building with no mortar is remarkable.

I made this photograph on a clear night with a warm glow sitting low on the horizon behind the hills. Long exposure pulled the cloud movement into soft streaks across the stars while the oratory itself held perfectly still. It would, of course. It's been doing that for a very long time.

The layered stonework catches the ambient light beautifully, each flat slab visible in the darkness. That narrow doorway facing almost due west gives the whole structure a quiet intensity against the night sky!

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.

Which finish should I choose?
  • Unframed Museum-quality Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper. Choose your own frame.
  • Framed Black wood frame, glazed with acrylic so it travels safely, with a mount on Exhibition and Feature sizes. Ready to hang.
  • Canvas Gallery-wrapped canvas.
  • Floating Panel Mounted on a 3 mm aluminium composite panel, made in-house. Frameless, no glass, ready to hang. Best for modern interiors and maximum impact.

★★★★★Nocturne Gallarus
On a trip to Ireland several years ago I was able to get out to the Dingle Peninsula and saw the Gallarus Oratory, a small chapel built in the 12th century or perhaps even before this time. We were able to go into this small structure and marvelled at how well it had held up. One stone laid carefully on top of another stone. I thought of people who might have huddled here centuries ago for shelter or prayer, a safe place for them. You see some movement of the clouds relative to the stars that are holding their place in the sky and this animates the structure and its surroundings. Now this beautiful picture hangs on a wall in my home in Florida and I get to experience the feelings I had when I first saw the Gallarus Oratory.
