Lemon Rock, Co. Kerry

Letters from the Landscape

I hit a lobster pot line on the way out. That wasn't part of the plan. The plan was to get to Lemon Rock for sunrise, photograph it properly for the first time, and get back to Portmagee before the swell picked up. Instead I spent a good while dead in the water, rolling in the Atlantic, trying to free a rope from the propeller while my breakfast made its objections known.

Lemon Rock is the smallest of the three islands running in a line from the Iveragh Peninsula out to the Skelligs. It stands about 20 metres out of the water. Not much to look at on a chart. But from sea level, in a four-metre swell with breaking cloud and that warm backlit glow filtering through from the east, it looks like something that could sink you without noticing.

I got the engine running again. I was not in great form. But the light was still good, the rock was right there, and I'd come out specifically for this. Shot it low to the water to get the scale right, the Iveragh headland just a dark silhouette on the horizon. Simple composition. It captures something of what it actually feels like to be out there, which is mostly very small!

Lemon Rock sits on the route to the Skelligs. For more about those islands, see my complete guide to Skellig Michael.

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
