The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

I nearly drove into a ditch. Heading north through Leitrim on my way to Donegal for the Atlantic Light project, I glanced through the windscreen and there it was. Ireland's tallest free-standing rock tower, 330 metres above sea level, rising from the escarpment like something that has no business being there.

I genuinely didn't know Eagle's Rock existed until that moment. The first recorded ascent wasn't until 1971, and it took another 41 years before anyone stood on the summit again. That tells you everything about how serious a piece of geology this is.

From above, the place reveals itself properly. The narrow ridge connecting to the main escarpment, the sheer vertical drop, the pinnacle standing in isolation. Below, impossibly green fields run off toward the distant coast. Leitrim has just 2.5 kilometres of coastline, the shortest of any Irish county, but what it lacks in coast it makes up for in vertical drama. The light was soft and directional that morning, cloud and blue sky trading places, shadows moving slowly across the cliff faces. Not stormy. More like the landscape was being revealed section by section.

One of those unplanned detours that ended up becoming a favourite part of the whole project. I'm glad I looked out the window at the right moment!

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
