Where the name comes from

Hólt is son of Holt, a personal name or nickname apparently of Norse origin, found in Domesday Book. An old surname still in use in Kildare and Wicklow. It should not be confused with the Anglo-Norman le Holde, the freeholder, which was in use here in the 13th century when William de Holde was one of the townsmen of Kilmallock.

Dublin

Dublin is a county as well as a city. The bay has Howth at the north end and Killiney Hill at the south, the Muglins are a pair of rocks off Dalkey, and the Dublin Mountains start about half an hour from the city centre.

Wexford

Wexford gets more sunshine than anywhere else in Ireland. Hook Head lighthouse has been working since the thirteenth century, which makes it one of the oldest in the world. The beaches on that coast, Curracloe and Rosslare among them, run for miles and are mostly empty.

Wicklow

The Wicklow Mountains are granite and start about 20 km from the centre of Dublin. Glendalough is a glacial valley with two lakes and a monastic site founded in the sixth century, including a round tower. Brittas Bay is about five kilometres of sand.
