Letters from the Landscape

Everything was packed away. That's the part I remember most clearly. I'd been shooting on the South Bull Wall at dawn, was done for the morning, gear back in the bag. Then I spotted him. A grey heron stalking through a tidal pool on the Sandymount Strand side, completely absorbed in his own breakfast hunt.

Murphy's Law says the bird flies the instant you're ready. I hauled everything out again anyway.

The tide was out, barely a breath of wind, and that shallow water had turned to glass. Low golden light across Dublin Bay. With a long lens I could isolate the heron completely against the flat surface. No rocks, no seaweed, no shoreline. Just the bird and its reflection, that slow deliberate posture with the neck stretched forward, every step calculated. He was remarkably co-operative. Stayed put long enough for me to pick my moment precisely.

This is one of the earliest photographs in my collection, and a rare wildlife image for me. I'm not a wildlife photographer. But sometimes you just need to ignore the voice telling you to leave the camera in the bag! The simplicity of this one is what I find so satisfying. It's stayed a favourite for years.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
