Where the name comes from

Miles is two Latin words that got mixed up. Mílidh is son of Milo, a name introduced by the Normans; Mílis is son of Miles, from the Latin miles, a soldier, used in the Middle Ages as a title until it became a personal name. The two were confused early and have been ever since. Mac Mílidh and Mac Mílis are the same pair with a prefix.

Ó Maolmhuire, descendant of Maolmhuire, the servant of Mary, is a quite different name: a family of Cinel Eoghain who were at one time chiefs of Cinel Fearadhaigh in Ulster, now rare, and anglicised Myles in Co. Mayo.

Dublin

Dublin is a county as well as a city. The bay has Howth at the north end and Killiney Hill at the south, the Muglins are a pair of rocks off Dalkey, and the Dublin Mountains start about half an hour from the city centre.

Wexford

Wexford gets more sunshine than anywhere else in Ireland. Hook Head lighthouse has been working since the thirteenth century, which makes it one of the oldest in the world. The beaches on that coast, Curracloe and Rosslare among them, run for miles and are mostly empty.

Wicklow

The Wicklow Mountains are granite and start about 20 km from the centre of Dublin. Glendalough is a glacial valley with two lakes and a monastic site founded in the sixth century, including a round tower. Brittas Bay is about five kilometres of sand.
