Patterson is the anglicised form of four distinct Irish names. Some you can hear in the English name; others look and sound nothing like it, and were simply swapped for it.

Where the name comes from

Mac Páidín is son of Padin or Pattin, a diminutive of Patrick, and it gives MacPaden, MacPadden, Padian, Patten and Patterson. The variant Mac Pháidín is a well-known surname in Ulster and in Mayo, and a Scottish one too; it produced MacFadden and Faddin as well.

Ó Casáin, descendant of Casán, from cas, bent or curly, is a quite different name that lands here. It belonged to a Galway family formerly seated in Ui Maine, still represented in that county, where it is anglicised Cussane and Patterson. In Kerry it is Kissane and in Cork, very corruptly, Cashman.

Antrim

The Antrim coast road runs about 25 miles between the cliffs and the sea, with nine glens coming down to it. The rock is basalt, the same flow that formed the Giant's Causeway. Scotland is 12 miles off at the narrowest point and visible on a clear day.
