The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

The aurora was remarkably active this particular night near Vík, throwing broad curtains of green light across the sky in shifting waves. The volcanic ridgeline to the south made a clean, dark edge against it all, which is exactly what you want. Too much foreground clutter and an aurora photograph falls apart.

What I like about this image is the sheer scale of the display. Multiple bands and ribbons running in different directions, bright enough to reveal stars between them. A single lit mast on the hilltop gives the whole scene a sense of proportion. Without it, you'd lose how vast this really was.

Clear skies, no moon, strong geomagnetic activity. The kind of night you travel to Iceland hoping for and rarely get!

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
