The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

Stokksnes is one of those locations every photographer has seen a hundred times in other people's work. Most of it shot from the same spot, with Vestrahorn looming in the background. I wanted something different, so I walked out across the black sand at low tide instead.

The tidal channel is what caught my attention. It cuts a long, curving path through the volcanic sand toward the mountains, and at low tide the wet ground holds just enough reflected light to separate it from the darker flats around it. The whole scene is almost monochromatic. Dark sand, grey sky, a thin band of brighter light at the horizon. That curve is the entire composition.

I'm glad I ignored Vestrahorn for once! The simplicity of this one is what makes it work for me.

What does shipping cost?

Free on orders over €75. Below that, you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any local duty is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
