Letters from the Landscape
Once you start watching them in the air, it's very difficult to stop. They ride the updrafts around the rock with barely a wingbeat, adjusting constantly with these tiny shifts of their wingtips. Effortless. The pair in this photograph were wheeling above the colony, and I was shooting upward into partly cloudy sky, waiting for a moment when one bird was sharp against the blue with the second just behind.
The light was bright but softened by cloud cover moving through, which kept the birds from blowing out against the sky. That golden-yellow wash on the head of the closer gannet only comes through properly in those conditions. Direct harsh sunlight would have lost it entirely.
What I love about this image is the grace of it. In the air, gannets are among the most elegant seabirds I've ever watched. On the ground, they're a disaster. They come in too fast, crash into their neighbours, squawking and flapping. The same animal, magnificent and hopeless within three seconds of each other!

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
