The Bull Rock sits off the Beara Peninsula, and my first visit there was supposed to be about the lighthouse. It wasn't. The gannet colony took over the entire afternoon, and I let it.
Thousands of birds crammed onto every available ledge. The noise is extraordinary. The smell, worse. I sat down in the middle of it all and didn't move for hours. This particular bird was in a territorial dispute with its neighbour, beak wide open, wings half-raised, hissing with real venom. Gannets look so elegant in flight, all clean lines and six-foot wingspan, but up close on the ledge they're properly aggressive. They'll draw blood without hesitation.
I was close enough to hear every hiss, close enough to feel the occasional wing brush past. The light was strong and direct, which on white plumage can be difficult, but here it caught the texture of the feathers and that open bill perfectly. And those eyes. A piercing, icy blue ringed with dark skin, set in that golden-buff head. When one turns to look at you from close range, it stops you.
I've been fortunate enough to return several times since, but that first afternoon on a rock in the Atlantic, the Beara coast hazy in the distance, is the one I keep coming back to!
