We get very few proper thunderstorms in Ireland. The odd rumble, a distant flash, maybe a half-hearted crack that sends the dog under the table. But genuine, sustained electrical storms are rare here, and when one rolled into Ballingeary on this particular evening, it felt like something borrowed from another climate entirely.
I'd been watching it build from the house, lightning playing across the mountains to the south and west. The kind of display I hadn't seen since living in the American midwest for ten years. Once things calmed down enough that standing outside with a metal tripod didn't seem completely reckless, I started shooting long exposures toward the ridge. Open the shutter, wait, hope. No composition adjustment, no fine-tuning. Just gambling that something will land in the frame while the sensor is listening.
Then it did. A single bolt lit up the underside of the clouds in this extraordinary blue-white flare, revealing the whole ridgeline and the conifers along the right edge. What I love about this photograph is that lens-shaped detail in the cloud structure where the lightning has punched through from below. The rest of the scene is almost completely dark, and then this violent burst of light exposes all the texture and form hidden above. You can plan for a lot of things in landscape photography, but you can't plan for lightning!
