Letters from the Landscape

I drive this road all the time. The single track from Gougane Barra towards home, a route I've taken for years. There's a copse of trees partway along that I'd always noticed and always passed. You know the way. The light isn't right, or you're on your way somewhere, or you'll get to it next week.

This particular day I was driving past again when I spotted two white horses standing in among the bare branches and boulders. Perfectly placed, watching the road. I drove on for maybe 200 metres before it hit me that I really needed to go back.

The horses hadn't moved. Both facing me directly, framed by those winter-bare trees I'd been meaning to photograph for so long. Dead bracken, moss-covered rocks, their coats faintly damp from the heavy air. No wind for once. No drama. The overcast light flattened everything but it brought out every shade of green in the moss and lichen, and let the white of the horses hold all the attention against that backdrop of grey and green and brown.

I'd pictured that copse as a landscape subject for years. It took a pair of horses to finally make me pull over!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
