Letters from the Landscape

I nearly missed the turn. Hedgerows tight on both sides, the road winding through darkness, and then it crests and the whole south-western coast drops away beneath you. Scarriff and Deenish Islands. The Bull and the Cow. The long arm of Beara reaching out toward Dursey.

This is Daniel O'Connell's country. His house sits just below, tucked behind the dunes. The Liberator grew up looking at this same view, and the stone walls running down through those fields to the coast predate him by centuries. That intersection of deep human history and raw Atlantic coastline is what keeps pulling me back.

I was set up before dawn on an autumn morning, hands numb, tripod sunk into soft ground. Broken cloud moving fast from the south-west, the light switching between flat grey and sudden bursts of low gold every few minutes. When it finally committed, the sun came in at maybe five degrees above the horizon and lit up the patchwork fields like a floodlight. Every stone wall threw a shadow. The white farmhouse in the middle distance glowed against the darker hillside behind it. Out over the water, haze softened the islands into blue-grey layers.

Ten minutes later the cloud closed over and that was that. Catch Derrynane when the light decides to cooperate and it becomes something you carry around with you for a long time!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
