The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

The westernmost point of the Irish mainland, and this fellow couldn't care less. That's what I love about this image. The Blaskets sitting out across calm water, golden light pouring in from the west, headlands layered one behind the other, and a sheep who just wants to eat grass.

I'd been waiting for one of them to wander into the foreground. Patience is a large part of what I do, and this evening it paid off quickly. He walked right into position, stopped, turned to face me with an expression that clearly said "Would you ever just take the photograph." So I did!

Dunmore Head carries real weight. The abandoned Blasket Islands across the sound, the wild cliffs, all that history and exposure. But the sheep grazing the steep hillside above the sea are entirely indifferent to it. I find that contrast genuinely funny and quietly moving at the same time. Kerry's coastline at its most peaceful, with a woolly local who had better things to worry about than the sunset.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
