Dunquin, Dingle, Co. Kerry

The wind at Dunquin was finding every gap in my clothing. Jacket zipped to the chin, tripod planted as firmly as I could manage on the cliff edge, and still my hands were numb. Below me, the Atlantic was throwing itself at those jagged sea stacks, and I needed to hold the shutter open long enough to turn all that violence into something quiet.

Heavy cloud had flattened the light. No harsh shadows to fight with. Exactly what I wanted. I spent a good while shuffling the tripod left and right, a few inches at a time, trying to hold the full curve of the winding path in the frame. Lose it, and the whole composition falls apart.

Here's the thing I love about this image. During the long exposure, sheltered grass stayed razor sharp. But any tuft catching the wind has gone soft, ghosted by movement. Stone and stillness on one side, motion on the other. I didn't plan that. The wind did it for me!

In black and white, the harbour walls and sea stacks read as pure structure. The tonal range carries all the weight, and the water becomes a smooth grey field rather than something your eye tries to interpret as ocean. It feels like a different place entirely.

Dunquin sits at the very tip of the Dingle Peninsula, the last stop before the Blaskets. The harbour is remarkably small from above. A delicate curve of stone holding back the whole Atlantic, and the ocean still having the final say.
