Letters from the Landscape

There's a logbook hidden under rocks at the very top of that higher peak on the right. If you can get up there, you write your name in it. A handful of people have managed it over the years. I'd love to be one of them.

I've been fortunate enough to land on Inis Tiaracht once and attempted to climb to that summit. Without ropes, it became clear fairly quickly that wasn't going to happen. The old path the lighthouse keepers used has eroded so badly in places that sections which were once a rough walkway are now just exposed rock face. I turned back.

This is the westernmost point of Ireland, and it looks it. Two jagged peaks rising straight out of the Atlantic, the lighthouse and its buildings clinging to the lower rock, waves hammering the base. I've photographed it from more or less this same perspective three times now, and each image is completely different. The sea state, the sky, the mood. This one, made on a blustery January day with the cloud sitting low and heavy, is my favourite. The diffused light flattens the colour but brings out every detail in the rock. You can see just how vertical and exposed the place really is.

The island changes every single time. That's what keeps me coming back, and why I have more near-identical compositions of Tiaracht than anything else in my collection. It never looks the same twice!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
