I first came to Bertra back around 2010, filming a landscape photography series called Dynamic Range with some friends. We'd wander around with tripods, trying to figure out how to talk about photography on camera. Those episodes are long gone now, buried somewhere in early YouTube. But I have fond memories of the place from the ground.
Coming back with a drone changed everything. From the beach, Bertra is a lovely stretch of sand at the foot of Croagh Patrick. From 100 metres up, you see the real architecture of the place. That long sandy tombolo cutting diagonally through the water, separating the flat calm of Clew Bay from the Atlantic surf. Dozens of grass-topped drumlins scattered across the bay like remnants of another world. Which, in a way, they are. Left behind by the last ice age.
The sky was heavy and grey, typical Mayo. But right along the horizon, a narrow band of golden light had slipped between the cloud base and the mountains. It gave the whole scene a warmth that had no business being there. Five minutes later it was gone.
That turquoise-green in the sheltered water, pale sand visible beneath the surface, calm set against the white surf on the Atlantic side. You simply can't see any of that from the beach!
