An Irish surname of Antrim and Dublin. In the 2010 US census it was carried by 105,936 people, the 291st most common surname in the country.

Little is the anglicised form of three distinct Irish names. Some you can hear in the English name; others look and sound nothing like it, and were simply swapped for it.

Ó Beagáin, descendant of Beagán (diminutive of beag , little). This family stood in Co. Clare and Co. Limerick.

Peitíd, Peitídh. This family stood in Co. Meath and Co. Westmeath.

Where the name comes from

Little is a translation three times over. Ó Beagáin is descendant of Beagán, a diminutive of beag, little: a rare and scattered surname, pronounced Ó Bigeáin in Co. Limerick and sometimes Englished Littleton there and in parts of Co. Clare. Ó Beig is descendant of Beag, little, plainly.

Peitíd is the Norman le Petit, the little, small of stature. The Petits settled early in Meath and Westmeath, where they obtained large grants of land from de Lacy, and were feudal barons of Dunboyne and of Mullingar. Petit, Pettitt and Petty are the name untranslated.

Antrim

The Antrim coast road runs about 25 miles between the cliffs and the sea, with nine glens coming down to it. The rock is basalt, the same flow that formed the Giant's Causeway. Scotland is 12 miles off at the narrowest point and visible on a clear day.

Dublin

Dublin is a county as well as a city. The bay has Howth at the north end and Killiney Hill at the south, the Muglins are a pair of rocks off Dalkey, and the Dublin Mountains start about half an hour from the city centre.
