Morrison

An Irish surname of Antrim and Dublin. In the 2010 US census it was carried by 121,130 people, the 250th most common surname in the country.

Morrison is the anglicised form of three distinct Irish names. Some you can hear in the English name; others look and sound nothing like it, and were simply swapped for it.

Mac Muiris, Mac Mhuiris, son of Maurice (a name introduced by the Normans). This family stood in Co. Kerry and Co. Mayo.

Ó Muirgheasáin, descendant of Muirgheasán (diminutive of Muirgheas). This family stood in Co. Donegal and Co. Mayo.

Ó Muirgheasa, descendant of Muirgheas (sea-choice). This family stood in Sligo Bay.

Where the name comes from

Ó Muirgheasáin, descendant of a little Muirgheas, is an old Donegal surname pronounced Ó Bríosáin and anglicised Briceson and Bryson. In Co. Mayo the pronunciation is Ó Príosáin, anglicised Price. Morrison is the same name again.

Mac Muiris, son of Maurice, belonged to a branch of the Geraldines in Kerry, lords of Lixnaw, and to a branch of the Prendergasts in Co. Mayo; Fitzmaurice, Morris and Morrison all come from it. Ó Muirgheasa, of the Ui Fiachrach on the southern shore of Sligo Bay, is a third.

Antrim

The Antrim coast road runs about 25 miles between the cliffs and the sea, with nine glens coming down to it. The rock is basalt, the same flow that formed the Giant's Causeway. Scotland is 12 miles off at the narrowest point and visible on a clear day.

Dublin

Dublin is a county as well as a city. The bay has Howth at the north end and Killiney Hill at the south, the Muglins are a pair of rocks off Dalkey, and the Dublin Mountains start about half an hour from the city centre.
