The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

The moss on that rock goes almost luminous green under moonlight. That's not something I expected the first time I saw it. Coumeenoole Beach has so much colour and texture already, and the moon doesn't impose anything of its own. It just lets whatever's there come through cleanly.

Getting down to the beach in the dark is an adventure. The path is steep enough in daylight, and at night you're navigating mostly by feel and occasional profanity. Worth it, though! The tide was well out, and with a long exposure the shallow water went flat across the sand, holding the sky like a second surface. There was a fair breeze off the Atlantic, waves working away beyond the headland, but the camera recorded none of that. Several minutes of movement compressed into a single still frame.

The large foreground rock anchors everything. Smaller stones scattered across the wet sand give the eye somewhere to travel, and then the cliffs close it all in behind. The Blasket Islands sit out on the horizon. Knowing that people lived out there, in one of the most exposed settlements in Europe, gives this whole stretch of coast a particular gravity. You're standing at the edge of a continent, and you feel it.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
