Letters from the Landscape

I'd been to Trá Chathail several times before this, and every visit the sea stack commanded the whole scene. You arrive at the strand and your eye goes straight to it. That's the photograph. Except this time, it wasn't.

Walking the beach with the tide well out, I noticed a dark flat boulder half-buried in wet sand. It had that look of something slowly being swallowed over centuries. The sand around it was slick, reflective. I set up low and close, let the rock take centre stage. An Searrach became the supporting cast, still prominent on the headland but playing a different role.

The afternoon was overcast with patches of blue moving through quickly. Good wind pushing clouds along, which is exactly what you want for a long exposure. I let the shutter stay open, watched the sea go smooth and the clouds streak out above the Dingle mountains.

What I like about this image is how different it feels from my earlier visits. Same beach, completely different picture. The boulder anchors everything, gives the eye somewhere to start before it travels out across that silky water to the stack and the hills beyond. Revisiting a location is where the real work happens. The first visit gives you the obvious photograph. The third, if you're paying attention, gives you something quieter and often more satisfying!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
