I've photographed Galley Head more times than I can count. From the road, from the fields, from the coast path. But I never really understood its shape until I got above it.
From the air, you can see exactly how far those fingers of dark rock reach out into the Atlantic. It genuinely surprised me. The lighthouse sits right at the tip, small and white against all that wildness, with its buildings arranged neatly behind it. And the fields. The fields run right to the cliff edge, divided by stone walls that look almost absurdly orderly given where they are.
The evening I made this photograph, heavy storm clouds had stacked along the horizon. The sun kept dropping behind them, then breaking through gaps to throw warm amber light across the headland while the ocean stayed dark and rough. White water churning against the base of the cliffs on both sides. That contrast between the golden backlight and the cold, turbulent sea is what made the whole thing work.
There's a particular satisfaction in seeing a familiar place freshly. The way the rock fractures into the water, the way the fields taper to nothing at the edges. I hadn't appreciated any of it before. It became one of my favourite photographs from the entire Atlantic Light project!
