Someone looked at this near-vertical lump of rock in open ocean and decided to build a functioning lighthouse station on it. Steps carved into the cliff face. A gasworks constructed right against the eastern wall. Keeper's buildings that were, against all expectation, genuinely cozy. The engineering is extraordinary, and from the air you appreciate the full scale of what was involved.
Bull Rock was the first offshore lighthouse I ever stayed at, and it holds a particular place for me because of that. I'd been working with Irish Lights on their Cork stations, and when the opportunity came to land on the Bull, I jumped at it. That first visit changed the direction of my work in ways I didn't fully understand at the time.
This aerial was made just after sunrise. The eastern face of the rock catches the early light beautifully at that hour, a warm pink-orange gradient along the horizon fading up into pale grey-blue. The Atlantic had that deep, dark, heavy look it gets in the early hours before the wind picks up. From this angle you can see the full extent of the complex, the helipad, the landing steps, the pathways. You can't quite make out the natural tunnel that bores clean through the island, but you know it's there, just below the gasworks. The colours that morning were wonderful!
