The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

Two seconds. Maybe less. I was on one of the traditional open boats that run through the lakes of Killarney, drifting up through the Meeting of the Waters to photograph the Old Weir Bridge and those narrow channels where ancient oak woodland comes right down to the waterline. Soft overcast light, no harsh shadows. Good conditions for stonework and river, if not particularly dramatic.

Then a heron launched from the bank directly in front of us. Enormous wings fully spread on the downstroke, neck forward, legs trailing. I swung the camera up on pure reflex and caught it mid-flight with the bridge arching across the background behind it.

Wildlife photography isn't really my area. I have the patience for waiting out light but not necessarily the reflexes for birds in sudden flight. The heron did the work by choosing to fly across my line of sight at exactly the right distance, and I was just quick enough not to waste it. You can't schedule a heron! It was a fortunate few seconds on an otherwise quiet morning, and I'm fond of this image precisely because it's not the kind of photograph I'd ever plan for.

Every print is signed. Unframed and framed prints are signed and titled by hand on the white border beneath the photograph.

  • Archival

  • Safe arrival

Prints are well-packaged, tracked and insured. If one arrives damaged, I'll replace it at no cost.

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.

Which finish should I choose?
  • Unframed Museum-quality Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper. Choose your own frame.
  • Framed Black wood frame, glazed with acrylic so it travels safely, with a mount on Exhibition and Feature sizes. Ready to hang.
  • Canvas Gallery-wrapped canvas.
  • Floating Panel Mounted on a 3 mm aluminium composite panel, made in-house. Frameless, no glass, ready to hang. Best for modern interiors and maximum impact.
Can I see it on my wall first?

★★★★★Heron, meeting g of the waters
What a beautiful photo, bought it for my wife as she really loves your gallery, bought a larger one during a visit to your gallery during the summer ( fastnet lighthouse) and it hangs proudly in our new home, she also crowd funded for your latest book " The Skelligs". I also must say that the lady that looked after us that day was so friendly and helpful and left us look around the gallery without ever feeling obliged to purchase which was great, looking forward to returning when possible, Thank again

★★★★★Lovely Irish photo of a fascinating bird
I purchased the Heron photo and gave it to my partner for his 30th birthday. We then lived by the Royal Canal in Dublin and often saw herons there, my partner’a favourite bird! He was very happy with this gift and it is currently hanging on our wall in our new home in Oslo. It’s a beautiful picture, we love looking at it every day!
