Letters from the Landscape

From the ground, Rossbeigh is a beautiful beach. From the air, it's a geological event. This long, curving finger of sand reaching out from the Iveragh peninsula into Castlemaine Harbour, with tidal flats spreading across the sheltered side like something drawn on a map. You simply cannot grasp the shape of it from sea level.

I've photographed this spit several times over the years, and it has changed noticeably between visits. The winter storms of 2013 and 2014 did serious damage, reshaping its profile and destroying the facilities at its base. Sand moves. That's what it does. But seeing the evidence from above, comparing one image to another made years apart, brings home just how dynamic these coastal systems really are.

This was made on an overcast day with cloud breaking low on the horizon, throwing soft, diffused light across the harbour. The water was remarkably calm, which let me capture real detail in the shallows. The mountains of the Dingle peninsula run along the far shore, the whole arc of the spit laid out below. Rossbeigh is Inch's partner, emerging from the opposite shore, thinner and shorter than its famous cousin but no less beautiful. From up here, you can see how they once reached toward each other across the water!

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.
