Puffin Island and the Skelligs, Kerry
Prints are made to order, so I can't take one back just because you've changed your mind, but if it arrives damaged or isn't what you ordered, I'll replace it at no cost. You can swap it within 30 days, though you'd cover the return postage.
I'd gone out that evening to photograph the Skelligs. Kept finding myself looking back at Puffin Island instead. It sits just a few dozen metres off the Kerry coast, this compact, rough little island with a green cap of vegetation, and most people barely register it on their way to Portmagee. Their loss.
A calm July evening, the Atlantic completely flat, and the air had that thick, hazy quality where everything beyond a few kilometres starts to dissolve. Puffin Island filled the foreground with all its texture and detail. Beyond it, Lemon Rock. Then the Skelligs, fading to near-silhouettes against a sky that was turning the colour of cold tea. Three formations lined up in sequence, each one a little more absorbed by the mist.
That's what I love about this stretch of coastline. The Skelligs get all the fame, and rightly so, but Puffin Island has its own character. Close enough to the mainland that you could nearly swim to it, yet it feels completely apart. The sea was barely moving. The light had that late, soft warmth that only lasts a few minutes before everything goes grey. I stayed longer than I'd planned!
If the Skelligs have caught your eye, I've put together a complete guide to Skellig Michael with everything from how to visit to the island's history.
