The photograph

Letters from the Landscape

I first visited Valentia Island in 2009 and I've been going back ever since. Some places just get their hooks into you.

This photograph looks west towards Bray Head, the imposing headland that marks the western tip of the island. The Skelligs were out on the horizon behind me, but on this particular evening my attention was entirely on what was in front of me. The sun was dropping fast, throwing warm amber light across the cliff faces while the surf hammered against the base of the rock. That sea arch at the bottom takes a serious beating on evenings like this.

What I love about this vantage point is the contrast you can take in from a single frame. Down below, the ocean is violent. White water surging through the arch, waves breaking hard against rock that has taken this punishment for thousands of years. Then you look to the top right and there's the Sound, barely a ripple on it. Sheltered, quiet, a completely different sea. I waited an hour and a half up on the hill above the head, half frozen, trying to eat a sandwich the wind kept rearranging. When the sun finally dropped low enough to rake across those cliff faces, everything changed in about three minutes. The green on top went bright, the rock turned gold, and the white water lit up against the dark Atlantic behind it. Three minutes. Worth every second of the wait!

Before you buy

When will it arrive?

You'll get an email with tracking as soon as it ships. If it's for a date, a birthday, an anniversary or a new home, add a note at checkout or email me at info@petercox.ie. I'll do my best to prioritise it and give you a realistic timeline.

What does shipping cost?

I ship worldwide, and every print from Exhibition size up goes free to Ireland, the UK and Europe. Studio prints and books carry a small charge, and the cost for the size you've chosen is shown under the Add to Cart button. The full table is on our Shipping page, and you'll see the exact cost at checkout before you pay. Every parcel is tracked and insured. Within the EU there's no customs duty; outside it, any import duty or tax is the buyer's to pay.

Does the size include the frame?

Yes. A framed size is the whole frame, edge to edge: 3 inches bigger each way than the print inside it. An unframed size is the sheet of paper, including the white border where I sign and title each print by hand. Canvas and Floating Panel sizes are the face of the piece.

Which finish should I choose?
  • Unframed Museum-quality Giclée print on archival cotton rag paper. Choose your own frame.
  • Framed Black wood frame, glazed with acrylic so it travels safely, with a mount on Exhibition and Feature sizes. Ready to hang.
  • Canvas Gallery-wrapped canvas.
  • Floating Panel Mounted on a 3 mm aluminium composite panel, made in-house. Frameless, no glass, ready to hang. Best for modern interiors and maximum impact.

★★★★★Amazing
Bray Head is a special place to us and the new dimension of seeing it from the air is something we never expected to move us so much. It provides a breathtaking aspect to the headland. I was late ordering this just before Xmas and it arrived 2 days later. A fantastic addition to our home, that makes me pause and stare regularly, and a fantastic service from purchase to delivery.
